Add all your complaints/remarks/notes about Kensuo in this thread. Also, if you find a bug, just mention it, and I'll look into it.

I really want to make something of this game. I'm not saying I'll release a new version any time soon, but still, any feedback is welcome.

Ok, so this is what I got so far:

- You should be able to ALT+RETURN at any point in the game to switch full screen to window.
- You should be able to esc at any point in the game
- Some Z values are incorrect
- The main maps needs to have it's lines fixed (will write own process to draw lines, this may actually solve the W98 bug)
- The Kensuo character might need redesigning. (Although this will be on the bottom of my list, as I'm not a very good GFX artist)
- Only using the space as an action button, even in the menu, for consistency.
- An invisible barrier found in desert levels on which only enemies can crawl.
- Bug with shield might still get you hurt when attacking the spikeblobby enemy.

Here's what I plan to do to expand the game. Tell me what you think of these ideas:

1) Add a timer. Every coin you pick up will add a few seconds to the timer. So you'll have to keep moving or you'll die. No time to wait around and just let your energy meter fill up every time your shield runs out.

2) To move on to the next island in the game, you'll have to pay 10 rubies to a ship captain. Every level contains 1 secret place with a ruby. It won't be hidden, but it won't be obvious either. So you'll have to explore levels more.

3) Add potions you can pick up and use at a later time. But I'm not sure if these should be hidden in levels, or possibly received for performing certain actions (like getting big combos).

Lastly, any remarks about the music, graphics, sound and overall difficulty of the game can go here too.

You can download the game here: http://www.booleansoup.com/ind … e=wip&id=13

I played the game and thought it was really good. I think you need to change the story though. I kinda rolled my eyes at the whole 'Mike Green kidnapped OMG' thing. Chances are it was Pete, and most of us dont care anyway. Although I thought all the dialogue exchanges with Mooky were pretty awesome. In fact, most of the text has a very funny style about it. Gives the game a lot of personality.

I think the main character needs a redesign. If you're staring at him for as long as this game promises to be, he needs more charm. I also think you should have a greater variety of bad guys. Even if that's just pallette swapping the blobs, it'll make the game world feel that more larger and complete.

1)I'll say no to a timer. I play most platform games like Sonic anyway, rarely removing my finger from the 'right' button. I only managed to get past certain parts when i slowed the fuck down and actually thought about it for a bit.

2)I like this. Do it.

3)How about have the user choose what the potions do from a selection of 2 or 3 abilities. Kinda like the upgrades from Deus Ex.

The Sound was great. And the difficulty was just about right. Man, that 'Creepy Castle Entrance' level pissed me right off. Keep up the good work.

I'm stuck at 50%. :(

The most annoying thing is when I get hit by a green thing Kensuo is thown backwards into the void! :( I keep dying so much. It's so hard. Maybe if when you die you don't start the entire level again but just the current sector? Just a thought.

I tried the 60% save and it crashes... with windows XP.

Other than that it's a great game! I think Kensuo's design is great :D , apart from the "YUH" attack voice doesn't suit a little pixie thing. :O or is he a ninja?

I'll give it a rating when I finish it!

Also a bug: blobs can throw Kensuo a little into walls!

Well, good news: I fixed the lines. I wrote my own process instead of using the fenix draw_line process, and now the lines are stable, and the game doesn't crash in either winXP or win98.

The bad news: The code I updated was an old build. I have the latest build on another computer. I move from place to place, so I won't be able to upload the patch till later this week.

I'll try to include some of the other stuff mentioned in this thread already. Get some of the bugs out of the way.

EDIT: Never mind, I've found the latest code. Expect a patch some time soon. Like either tonight or tomorrow. I hope.

I placed a large comment here, feel free to reply. :D

Quoting Tovi:

Yeah I noticed that I couldn't quit the menu. Also the window exit button top right doesn't work in windowed mode.

Personally I had no problem with the character and liked it's style.

The game's hard enough already! Without getting 5 lifes for free when you run out, I wouldn't have made it.

Good idea. I'd like to receive them for combos.

Overall, nice game!

I don't actually know how to activate the exit button in a fenix window...

In the level where planes emerge for the first time I managed to fall off the end of the level by doing the second attack (which shoots you forward) which brought me behind the checkpoint teleport thing after which I walked off the end of the level. I kept falling forever without dying.

Well, of all the test runs I had in the game, I never saw that coming. This is a structural mistake, I'll have to add some stuff to the level. It's fixable, but I'll do this one later, cause now I want a code patch.

Quote:
These wheel enemies actually have their rolling animation to the wrong side when they move to one side.

Well spotted. Fixed.

Quote:
When I finished off the giant blob the first time, I died after the talk dialog ended even though I had already won. =/

I changed some stuff so now you should get max lives the moment you kill the boss. I can understand this would be frustrating... Sorry :s

Quote:
Jumping is still jerky (make it a parabole or something? Seems a bit like a triangle jump right now).

Yes. When I first made the game, I didn't even think of this. That's why the jumping is like that. I tried changing it after Ferret suggested it, but it got too glitchy, so I put things back the way they were. I don't know if I can change this with my current game engine. I might give it another go at some point, but I dunno... Don't get your hopes up.

Quote:
Sometimes it's not obvious at all if a 'gap' is something that makes you die or if there's a platform beneath it.

I didn't think of this. For me, all of this is obvious because I created the maps... I'll make a prop sign with warning skull on it to warn you of instant death spots.

Quote:
And last but not least why can't I just loose a heart when I accidentily touch the spears pointing up? It's such a hard punishment to have to restart the level for such a minor mistake!

I'll do just that in the next release. Right now it would require me to adjust a bit too much code, plus the levels too. Not all the pits with spikes in them are small enough to jump out of.

Quote:
Jumping on enemies somehow results in dying about 25% of the times, I don't even dare trying anymore. (I don't mean the spikebeasts ofcourse) but however there's a chance it's just me.

I know when this happens. When 2 enemies overlap eachother, and you jump them. I made kensuo jump a little higher when he bounces off an enemy, so this SHOULd in theory be fixed. I just tested it, and it seems fine now. I was hoping no one would run into a situation like this, but hey... Most likely fixed.

All of these are fixed.

Quote:
And I was wondering about the special sword in the castle level; somehow I can't get out that room after I took the sword, how should I do this?

Next release I'll make it easier to get out. But it's the same way you got in: You get hurt, and the backwards motion of Kensuo slings you into the opening. You can't jump into it, so don't waste your time :p

The point is that you lose two lives, but the sword you get is longer, so it actually makes the final boss easier. (In case you didn't notice, you can finish the last boss off real easy with just your sword attack.

I'll upload the patch in a second...

Oh hum ta dum I remember one more bug: when there's a block that's higher than the ground on the right, and I stand on it and use the 2nd attack, I can use it again while still being in the air. I've manged to fly over a certain distance like that using the attack 3 times in a row without falling out of the air. :)

It's not a bug to be able to do that once, but you shouldn't be able to do it several times in a row without falling. You'd just be able to fly across the level then. I'll see what I can do.

The first boss is bugged, in several ways.

1) To the right of him, you can fall further than the lava

2) You can (somehow) get trapped in a tile of scenery to the left of where you find the potion. There's like a tile that gets destoyed before the tile above it, resulting in you being trapped

3) When it only had 2 blobs of life left, the boss just froze in mid air, and didnt move.

Yes, you're right. It can happen on the left aswell. It happens when you get hurt and fall back, I forgot to add something to stop you from falling. It doesn't happen when you jump, which is why I never noticed. I'll just have to edit the level a bit.

You're gonna have to be a bit more specific with these two. Cause I can't replicate them...

I tried to take a screen shot but it screwed up (they both happened at the same time), I'll have another go if it happens again. They both happened at the same time really quickly, so I'm not sure how.

Oh, so you could keep playing the game? All you had to do was wait a little? Or did you really get stuck in the wall to the point you could no longer do anything? And how long did the boss freeze in mid-air?

No, I couldn't move at all, I was stuck where a tile of scenery used to be, but still had tiles surrounding it on all sides.

Quoting Tovi:
And how long did the boss freeze in mid-air?

I don't know, he just stopped moving, while in mid jump after I'd managed to hit him with a fireball (he stayed in that same position). The same freezing thing happened another time very early in the fight (making it well easy to defeat him, as he wasn't moving).

And another thing (less specific this time). When you have a saved game on the last level (but you haven't actually finished the last level) the load screen shows it as 100%. Surely, as you haven't actually finished the game yet, it should still be less than 100%?
