Any opinions on the new IE 7 BETA 2, Opera 9 BETA and Firefox 2 Alpha 1? I've got IE 7 and Opera 9, but decided not to get firefox 2 yet as its only alpha 1.

IE now has tabs, a print preview that allows you to edit pages so they fit onto a sheet of A4 (and other stuff), a feature that lets you zoom in on pages without losing image quality, and i can't remember what else. Oh, it also lets you preview all tabs in one window, so you can select which one you want, the "new tab" button is also more convenient and obvious than the one in firefox 1.5. The toolbar's been slimmed down, and is more customisable, there's intergrated search for just about any engine you want, and all popups are blocked unless you ctrl+click them, allowing you to chose what you see and what you dont want.

This is my first version of opera, so I don't know exactly what it had before. It's lets you preview tabs by clikcing and holding them. It has intergrated bittorrent search and download (as well as other intergrated search engines). Opera also has zoom, but goes further by allowing full screen (leaving the start bar visible) and "small screen" where it converts the website into a formatt that will fit on a screen about 200 pixels wide. Opera also has an annoying habbit of putting things that float above all of your windows on the screen.

One of them now tells you the exact URL of popup windows, so you can block that URL if you want to, but i can't remember which one.

So now, download, explore and discuss!

IE Beta has bugs and too many options and other shit you don't need as usual though.

Firefox consumes double as much RAM as another browser, and xml works like shit in it.

Never used opera, but it's probably shit too.

I'm considering never to browse the internet again with all those shit-browsers.

SHIT!

Maybe if the new IE is finished and they don't ask over $1500 to install it, I might try it.

Right..

And maybe if Microsoft stuffed half the stuff Firefox needs in Windows it would be as small as IE is. Maybe you should write a browser yourself Rhovanion.

The reason IE became the most popular browser is because it is FREE

You mean because Microsoft abused their market position to form a monopoly. Not because it is free.

to be fair to them, if you had such a big monopoly, you would use it. Giving things away for free is good, just cause they can.

It's agressive and unfair business practices. If they should be allowed to do that then there would be a single world-wide dictatorship.

I know microsoft are reportedly not exactly straight with their practices, but nothings wrong with free. If they've earned enough money to make it free, then why not? I'm not complaining, cause it's resulted in a range of quality, free, competetive web browsers.

As already stated, the reason is not because it's free, otherwise everyone would be using Linux.

People don't use Linux because it sounds hard to install. And before you laugh or whatever, realise that a lot of people don't even know how to install Windows. They get it pre-done.

Linux is getting easier to use all the time. As far as I know/have heard, Ubuntu is pretty easy to install and use.

When I did Fedora Core 4 it was pretty painless to install, most of the default settings were fine and it explained everything in full, easy to understand English every step of the way.

And anyway, having Windows always being pre-installed on every machine without giving anyone a choice in the matter is still a bit of abuse in my opinion.

Do sports shops only stock the most popular brands and tell everyone else to take a hike? No, the clothes industry is pretty fair, even PC hardware is pretty easy to get a foothold into if you can produce the goods, software is another matter.
Of course this holds true for games, when was the last time a small game company sold well? They might get a lot of press (latest one that comes to mind is Darwinia) but it doesn't do amazingly well.

In games, unless you have one of the big publishers behind you, then don't expect to get much. And when you do get a big publisher, they hold all the cards and call a lot of the shots.
Game still isn't finished? Well oh dear, EA wants it out in two weeks because they own your arse. This stuff happens way too often.

Of course this is a bit of a tangent from the matter at hand. But my point is that monopolies suck, and it's stupidly prominent in the software industry, to the point of it being ridiculous. And Microsoft make every effort to abuse that.

I would use a monopoly obviously, if I was a conglomerate. However abusing your monopoly, which Microsoft did, is a different thing.

If it was such a good thing to abuse their position then why do they have to pay such large penalties for doing it?

They do not give away IE for the good of their health. IE has msn search as the deafult search engine. The amount of money made from selling advertising on this search engine is in the billions. If they didn't force IE into the the operating system then OEMs could install their own browsers with their own search engines and shit.

Also the fact that people made web sites only work in IE meant u had to have IE to see half the internetweb so in conculusion Opera is probabley shite too.

If some one's narrowminded enough to only make their site work in IE (or their just too stupid to make it work in other browsers) then the site probably isnt worth visiting.
You can change the default search engine for IE very easily, and who blames them for putting their own engine as the default? I'm sure you would.
And neither I nor you know any details microsoft may have to pay, or any other company for that matter.

Oh yeah that is why so many web sites only worked in IE.

U don't read the news or what? It's called a monopoly nobody else is allowed in. They are abusing their position. Not alot of computer using people know how to change the search engine.

I would love to deem my college website (which doesn't work in anything but IE6) "not worth visiting," but then I wouldn't be able to register for classes or read my e-mail. The simple fact is that the Internet could be so much more than it is today if it weren't for Microsoft holding it back. It's been stagnant while MS kicks back and watches the money roll in, and it will remain so for as long as it's profitable for them to maintain a divided web.

Ipso facto QED etc.
