Does anyone know of any alternatives to visual basic that are either free or open source? I mean, something that allows for application developement where you can directly control the gui...

Thanks,

Delphi 6 is visual too I believe. :D And I think it's free. I have no experience with it though.

Yeah, I know the link above is 2006.

If it's free - where from? I've used delphi a bit before, but didn't keep using it - mainly because the version I had was from a cover CD, and I couldn't distribute applications (I probably never would have anyway, but I didn't like the 'restricted' feeling about it)

Hey I just heard of this thing called Mono. They still work on the .NET 1.1 framework but it's open source and it's C# or vb.net.

see: http://www.go-mono.com

This might be just the thing you were looking for.

There are plenty around, just of my head.

FreeBasic
SDLBasic
WxBasic
Gambas

Then other than basic

Python

And of course C/c++

gcc
g++

But if you are used to Microsoft Basic then http://www.freebasic.net/index … ection=features will most probably be the easiest to adapt to.
