In general I like to read PC Plus, although I find some of it's programming articles a bit too simple and pointless, the articles on computers and technology are very good.

The thing is I want to read more about desiging software and programming in general. Can anyone recomend a magazine for this?

On the subject of web sites I regularly read A List Apart and Jacob Nielsen's UseIt.com for information about designing and making web sites can anyone recomend similar sites which concentrate on offline software solutions using c, c++ or java.

Are there any programming magazines at all?
Do you think one would sell?

I'm starting to see £ signs.

There is the Game Developer Magazine I've never read or seen it though. I don't know if the market is big enough ferret but it is crying out for something quality like Tom's Hardware but for software and in print.

I'm just sick of these step by step tutorials that don't tell you anything new or teach you like a moron where you have to buy five issues of a magazine only for it to boil down to running their source code rather then them showing you how to do anything cool and new.

There was a magazine called Game Maker out for while... that's where I read about Adventure Game Studio. I don't think they still publish it though. I've not seen it for ages. As for coding in general, I dunno.

DTM: That looks like more step by step tutorials and random source, like the exact stuff PEader doesn't want.

He's talking like general game/software design and programming.

A thought occurs, how much could you really talk about?

[edit]

Game Developer Magazine looks like it has a lot of ads... :F

Codeproject bites. I go there occasionally.

None of the main sites seem to be any use anymore. GameDev.Net has really fallen by the way side apart from the forums. Flipcode has closed. :-(

GameTutorials.com went commercial in a bad way(, maybe they changed back?).

http://www.devmaster.net/ is the where all gametutorial members went when it became commercial

GamaSutra.com which is linked to the game developer magazine is probably the closest to the kind of thing I am looking for but surely there is some hidden web site out there. There must be something for this sort of thing, considering how popular alistapart is with web design people.

I guess there is just hundreds of small sites pandering to specific languages and loads of tutorial sites meaning that this sort of thing isn't needed.

Just as a follow up I've rencelty gotten copies of Software Developer magazine, game developer and am awaiting a copy of Dr. dobbs journal. The Game developer mag seems ok. It's full of crap but there were one or two intresting articles. Same with software developer. I might subscribe to game develper magazine. I'd say I'd prob subscribe to Dr. dobbs journal also as this has amalgamated several other mags recently.

I would do an article :). As a school project I have to make an 3D network RTS-game with 6 people. It's a great experience and I could write something about it.

We have to use delphi, so pascal as programming language. DirectPlay component for network and OpenGL for the 3D.
