Do you ever think you might have the option of posting HTML alongside or as an alternative to BBCode?

Well there is more formatting options with HTML, like tables, whereas with BBcode you need to implement these things yourself. As well as there being people out there who already know HTML and not all these varieties of BBcode.

I dunno if the benefits outweigh the effort and risk. How many people are going to need to use tables in posts? And what kind of strange fellow knows HTML but isn't familiar with standard BBCode?

Hmm, a valid point you raise. Tables was just one example, you can do more with HTML to markup comments then you can with BBcode and I prefer using HTML ;-). It is just an idea. I know most places don't have HTML support.

As for the effort and risk HTML parsing can be implemented with little or no effort and the risks can be minimised through the use of SafeHTML. This is used in many web sites to ensure the HTML is valid and "secure". It could probabely run along side your current BBcode implementation as an extra security anyway. Ensuring any exploits in the BBcode don't make it through to the forum.

On another note what about syntax highlighting in posts on the forum? GeShi makes syntax highlighting a breeze. Be sure to check out the demo.

That GeSHi is just what we were after! And I see DIV has been added to the language list - although it doesn't seem to highlight all the ENDs properly

I may be a bit of an unexperienced n00b when working with SQL and forums...

But how about supporting both BBcode and HTML, and disable all HTML that you think may pose a risk?

Since SafeHTML could do the work for us, I like this idea.

Also: the syntax highlighting idea is outstanding.

Syntax highlighting has been on the list for ages, but never actually came up with a decent way of defining now languages easy. I'll check out this Geisehhsehsego.

[edit]

That is PERFECT. But yes DIV is a bit messed up, did you let them know yet Frim? If not I will.

Related point:

How about we have scrolling code boxes like on the http://www.GameDev.net forums? Or do people think they suck? On the one hand I can see how they'd stop 28 million line newbie code making the thread huge, but those pokey little boxes make it pretty hard to read any code at all... and 28 million lines will always be impossible to read through anyway =/
