The rain pelted itself against the window of the train carriage. I knew this case was going to be tough. But never this tough. About three weeks ago some suave motherfucker in a deep black suit and tie, real expensive and classy like, struts into my office. He asks me to track down this guy. He's real defensive when I ask him what he knows. I shut up when he plants fifty large on my desk, promising another fifty when the case is over. There's no photo, no MO, all he had to offer was a fucking pseudonym. Wink Martindale. So I get to work. The only Wink Martindale I could dredge up was some guy who hosted a game show or two back in the sixties. I can't find any film prints or stills. Supposedly all destroyed in a fire a few years back at the network. I dig deeper. The name doesn't turn up again until I find a record of a Wink Martindale running a gang in Chicago. Arrested and discharged on October 8, 1871. The day of the Great Chicago Fire. The further I went back, the more his name came up. I also discovered that I wasn't the first man hired to track this monster. That led me here. To this train. I was on my way back from Minnesota. While out there I met up with John Harkings, a man who who did what I'm doing twenty years back. He went insane. His 'accommodation' is covered in The Name. All he did while I was there, was sit in the centre, staring at the wall. Winking. The nurses say this is a good day for him. I lean over in my seat and stare out the cabin window. It's dark outside, and the rain is hitting the ground heavy. It's quite soothing. But just as I feel like I'm drifting off into my slumber, something catches my eye. A light. Dim, but definite.
