The Untitled Ninja Game (Er_Makina's Worklog)

My Competition 2006 Worklog RSS Feed

Getting things thought...

Hi, I'm Er_Makina and I have just registered and started this worklog to make my new brand, ass-kicking ninja-related game for the competition :)

Yep, I have decided already for the theme "Pirates and/or Ninjas", just "Ninjas" in my case. I like those games where you can fight using a lot of combos and doing cool punches, kicks, jumps and grabs (not fight games like Street Fighter, but beat'em ups like Oni and the like). So my game will probably be a beat'em up, with some (super-)ninja abilities, of course, like jumping and running over walls and ceilings, throwing knives and shurikens, stealthing (in some situations), doing the I-am-at-two-different-places-at-the-same-time trick (what's the "formal" name for that? I forgot), etc. (You are thinking of Naruto? Noooo, hehe, but some stuff vaguely similar).

I'm not very good at making graphics, so they will have a cartoonish style. I can hand-draw some background elements, and maybe do the characters in Moho.

How about language, technology, etc?
Definitively, C and SDL. That's where I have most experience and I want the game to be multiplatform (I use a Mac and a PC at home). I have used OpenGL before, so I can also give SDL+OpenGL a try. If at least the FX can be cool... ;)

For sound+music I'll use fmod. It's not free software but it's the best thing I'm aware of, and it's easy to use.

Yes, C. C++ is crap. Don't insist. :Þ

When I get home, I'll try to put WoW a little away from me and get to work :)

Wish me luck!

Hello Er_Makina, welcome to Boolean Soup. Sounds like a good idea, especially the wall & ceiling running and the throwing of knives and shurikens. The being at two places at the same time, will that be like the shadowing as it was done in OMF: 2097?Good luck with your project!

Have you considered using C++? I hear it's quite cool.

I'm struggling to put wow away from me too. I can't manage time for shit once I have that up and running.

Thanks Ricewind! I have not played OMF 2097, so I don't know what is its shadowing like (now you mention it, I downloaded it yesterday and tried to run it but I couldn't manage to get it smooth enough in DOSbox). The idea I have is either to have a "mirror image" of yourself on the other side of the screen, or maybe leave a static image, like a holoduke, that lasts 2 seconds or so, giving you time to jump around and attack the enemy from the back. I have not decided it yet though.

I like the holo-duke idea. Make the holo-ninja jump up and down and wave flags, similarly to Naruto, to attract attention. But also, that kind of thing gets shown to friends.
