New worklog

I've decided to try and motivate myself to continue this project by making a worklog for it. At the moment there's almost complete character movement and some animation, but that's about it. However I do think that those two things should be the most important part of the game so I want to get them right.

The game is designed to be a very fast and fun affair with lots of in the air acrobatics and other such goodness. Fighting is going to be simple with just a sword and some-miscelaneous-projectile-weapon (probably will be a bow). Each will have just one key and repeatedly pushing the sword key while hitting the enemy will gain you combos. Now I know that doesn't sound interesting, but the idea is to keep that simple as controlling the character's acrobatics is more part of the game than using a 15-key-impossible-combo-that-kills-everything.

So, at the min there's running, jumping, double jumping, wall-hanging, rolling, diving, rolling backwards and diving backwards all implemented and working pretty well, as well as a hardness map system that isn't ridden with bugs like my last one :). This still image is probably going to look pretty boring but when running at 40-60fps and with the speed of the movement then it's much more fun.

Coming next is more arm/weapon-related animation and some attacking implemented.

I need some help with controlls though, it's all a keyboard affair, but I'm not sure whether to use the arrow-keys or WASD for the main directional movement, considering that the other hand will have to handle at least 4 other commands and I want it to be at least somewhat intuitive. What would you prefer?

Sounds like fun, besides the bow and map scale it somewhat makes me think of the game Alien Homonid, which is a truly brilliant quick paced platformer that is controlled with only the arrows and 2 action keys, yet there's a large variety of acrobatic moves and brutal combos to use while flying through the game.

Is this going to be a stickman game or are those temporary graphics?

and if it is a stickman game will it have lots of blood effects to counter balance all the black and whiteness?

The stickman might stay as character animations take ages to draw, but the levels and the enemies wont be stickmen (well, I might have a few stickmen enemies), but yes, there will be blood, lots thereof

The level in the screenshot is just placeholder while I was getting the animation and movement working
