******************************************************** Quoting PB: Atheism is indeed a religion: it's te believe that there is no god. Atheism is not a religion. Most dictionaries define religion as 'the believe in a superhuman power'. Atheists obviously do not believe in a superhuman power, that's the whole point. What you are probably trying to say is that people stick to atheism as righteously and blindly as religious people stick to their religion. The contrary is true, the lack of this religious sturdyness automatically results in 'atheism'. Quoting PB: Still many fundamentalist atheists are anti-religious though. Anti-religious people are always a bit crazy though There's no such thing as a "fundamentalist atheist" - the point of the word "fundamental" means going back to the roots/fundaments of something. While a religion's holy book might be seen as the fundament of religion, there's no such thing for people who don't believe in god. You are mistaking it with the way it is used in respect to religions, because in religions fundamentalism apparantly leads to extremism. ******************************************************** Now if you and Dennis would please stop claiming wrong things about atheism, then perhaps we can continue on topic. Despite "Jesus Christ" being the topic title, it's not what this topic is about. ____________ Personal website: http://www.loijson.com |

i fully agree Rince. i hate how so many people think atheism is a religion/belief system. It is the ABSENCE of belief. What PB is thinking of is Agnosticism, the active disbelief in god. ____________ "clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right. here i am, stuck in the middle with you." ~Stealers Wheel |

Quoting Caspah: i fully agree Rince. i hate how so many people think atheism is a religion/belief system. It is the ABSENCE of belief. What PB is thinking of is Agnosticism, the active disbelief in god. You're confusing terms. Atheism is the belief in the absence of God(s). Some people differentiate between strong atheism (the belief in the absence of gods) and weak atheism (the absence of belief in gods). Agnosticism states that there can be no proof either way, a position of "we don't know". Sorry for not pointing out the role of wombats in the downfall of American economy. I don't know about that. The US is building up sea and air forces near the borders of Iran. The air carrier "Joh C. Stennis", which carries 3200 men and 80 combat aircrafts, has been sent to the Persian Gulf together with 14 other ships, 4 nuclear submarines and Patriot anti-missile systems. Allegedly because of 'exercises' in the Persian Gulf, or more accurately: Quoting [url=http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/03/27/us.gulf.ap/index.html: CNN[/url]]In January, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the Stennis strike group was being sent to the Mideast as a warning to Iran that it should not misjudge America's resolve in the region. Bush is going to make sure the world will remember him. ____________ Personal website: http://www.loijson.com |

Quoting Caspah: Oscoder: "American civil religion"? why would you call it that? we dont call al qaeda Middle Eastern death worship. Its Islamic radicalism or extremism, just as it is Christian radicalism or extremism in the US. Because it is a religion, and seems to be based on affirming the american system (i.e. racism, war, oppression of the poor, etc). It is not Christian because it is quite contrary to what Christ taught (and indeed the majority of the bible). ____________ om |

Islam does not teach suicide bombing and killing innocents, yet we still call it islamic radicalism. Therefore I will continue to call christian radicalism what it is. Also, what the hell? Racism, war and oppression of the poor are NOT american values. Republican, maybe.

Quoting Caspah: Racism, war and oppression of the poor are NOT american values. Sorry. I kinda meant values that are/had been supported by america.Quoting Caspah: Islam does not teach suicide bombing and killing innocents, yet we still call it islamic radicalism. Therefore I will continue to call christian radicalism what it is. Ok. Just so long as by that you mean radicalism (whatever that is) under the guise of Christianity, not Christianity applied in a radical way (which would mean going back to its root teaching, thus definetely not supporting wars, oppression of the poor, economics based on selfishness, etc). edit (back on topic): [Edited on April 10, 2007 by OScoder] ____________ om |
