games are terrible

* Progress on the website continues despite a short lull, bugs are being fixed and features are being planned. Any ideas for features should be posted in the BS Development Forum and bugs should have a ticket opened for them in the Bug Tracker.

* It's Ludum Dare again this weekend! As always this 48 hour game coding frenzy looks far too tempting to be healthy.

* Our brave solider Ariet Yust has finished his military service and returned to the fold, bestowing upon us such wisdom as "There Is No Price For Freedome". Quite.

* There's rumblings of a new Boolean Soup competition, this one would be a so called "De-Make" - Take a modern game and retroify it. More details to follow.

As always upload your games, submit your links, post your work, be sociable and eat your vegetables.

I'll eat them vegetables.

In other news: 16 GB of Boolean Soup's bandwidth has been wasted away in 5 days.

Quote:
This is an automated message notifying Reseller sr012 that 86.7137 % of his/her bandwidth has been used up. It is estimated, at the current rate of use, that the account will be used up in 0.9 days, at which time the account will be suspended for the remainder of the month.

I took a look at the logs, and it seems the reason for this strangely high amount of traffic is this game that was being hot linked here: http://colombian-lands.softonic.com/descargar (the "descargas gratis" button). I used the handy "rename download folder" feature, and changed the automatic rename rate to once per day, because this was going pretty fast.

Max. bandwidth by the way was still 20 GB while it should be 40 GB, I mailed the host about it.

The current method would work pretty well with a high link change rate. Roughly 3 GB is currently wasted per hotlinked game per day, with a link change rate of 1 / day we will live unless a site decides to index multiple games at once. If it's possible to have a change rate higher than once a day then we'll be completely out of trouble.

Currently a lot of hot linked visitors are being directed to an error page. This is free advertising, shall I put in a 404 page that forwards everyone to the Boolean Soup frontpage?

The reason it's only once a day is because if someone is currently downloading a game it will cut them off.

Slow connection + big files + high rate of change = fail.

And yeah do the 404 thing.

In other news, some idiot stabs a man and blames GTA IV?

Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV has been pulled from Thailand's shelves after a murderer admitted that he was inspired by the game.

Distributor New Era Interactive Media has asked stores in Thailand to remove the game from their shelves after an 18-year-old man, who confessed to killing a 54-year-old taxi driver, said he was recreating a scene from the game.

"We are sending out requests today to outlets and shops to pull the games off their shelves and we will replace them with other games. We are also urging video game arcades to pull the games from service," said Sakchai Chotikachinda, sales and marketing director of New Era Interactive Media.

Police said the killer, who was reportedly an obsessive fan of GTA IV, revealed: "He wanted to find out if it was as easy in real life to rob a taxi as it was in the game."

The funny bit about that is that the killer didn't actually have GTA IV.
