Most of you think "omfg it sucks!!1one" before even trying it, but I must say that you should give RPGMaker XP a chance.
As in previous versions of RM you already have a load of graphics and predefined stuff (called RTP package) which is perfectly editable and you can import your own graphics.

New in RMXP is that the engine is more flexible. It includes a ruby scripting engine which allows you to "reprogram" the engine or add new features of your own. If you hate random encounters you can program your own system by making new classes etc... If you think the battle system sucks, you can make your own battle system.

I'd say "try it out" for at least once. It is sooo much better than RM2K and you have soooo much more control over everything.

As someone who used RPGM95 back in the day.

I have tried it. It's terrible.
The ruby is written terribly and is very hard to navigate. The only up is that it has support for any sizes of sprites and 16 bit colours. Which was a natural extension.

Other than that it's not much better, it's still completely obsolete like it's predecessors. Call me when they include support for 3d models.

Naturally! If it has 3D model support it is better because 3 > 2!

Maybe you have to get used to the syntax. Basically if the syntax looks like the syntax you used the most (i.e. php and C++ and Java) you think it is "better" because it is easier for you to read and to program (but not for everyone). If you like a specific cell phone, you'll pretty much always stick to the same brand.

I don't think you can say it is terrible though.

I use Python too (and love it) which is similar to Ruby syntactically.

I wasn't calling Ruby terrible, I was calling the code they have written with it.

I enjoyed RPG maker 8 years ago, but I shied away from it quickly because it isn't all that hard to program an RPG up to RPG maker standards manually, with the huge advantage that you have total control. I think it's especially fun for people that don't program. An increase of control in the newest version is of course good, but if it's Ruby code as Ferret says is indeed very hard to navigate in, then I doubt a lot of (non programming) RPG maker users will make the step to serious coding this way.

Not all that hard? I don't think I've seen many finished RPGs even with RMXP, let alone coded without an engine.

Prove me wrong, because I don't think it is easy. It's still a LOAD of work.

Most people who can write games have much more fun things to program than an RPG, or don't have the capacity for any sort of interesting storytelling. But let's face it, very few RPGs have good stories.

That is only your personal opinion.
Personally I think the python syntax sucks ass and leaves you frustrated, while you actually like it.

Personally I think many RPG's have good stories comparing it to games like Crysis with no real story in it at all. It only has badass graphics but the game itself is as boring as webdesign.
